Then the full moon of the 15th night of the 8th month shone on the surface of Lake Biwa, and the idea of a tale came to her mind. Thus, it is said, she first wrote the “Suma” chapter. The sixty chapters of the Tale of Genji were based on the sixty volumes of the writings of Tendai Buddhism . The names were named on the basis of the “four gates” : the “visible gate,” the “invisible gate,” the “visible and invisible gate,” and the “neither visible nor invisible gate.” The chapters were decided in four ways: the first was to take a word from the prose parts of the chapter, the second was to take a word from a poem, the third was to take a word used in both the prose and poetic parts of the chapter, and the fourth was to use a word appearing in neither the prose nor the poetic parts of the chapter. The author was original called T_ Shikibu, but she was given the name Murasaki because the section of the Genji dealing with Lady Murasaki was especially well written. Murasaki Shikibu may have been an incarnation of the Buddha Kannon. She was allowed to be in the bloodline of the Tendai masters by the priest of the Dana Temple.
